Hi there, and welcome to Write On!
My name is Zack Maio, and I am a journalist, editor, photographer, and storyteller with a passion for highlighting the people, events, and accomplishments that make our communities unique.
My love for journalism began at Straughn High School, where I served on the yearbook staff and was selected as editor during my senior year. Following graduation in 2005, I helped re-launch the yearbook at The University of West Alabama and served as the athletics section editor before I became the editor my senior year in 2008.
After taking a few years off from the journalism field, I returned to writing in 2011 and covered the varsity sports at Straughn for the next 10 years, gaining valuable experience along the way.
That foundation led me to the Andalusia Star-News, where I spent four years as the newspaper’s staff writer covering local news, education, sports, community events, businesses, and feature stories. Through hard work and a commitment to serving readers, I was promoted to editor in 2025, allowing me to lead coverage efforts and help strengthen the newspaper’s connection with the community.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of telling several stories including students, educators, athletes, community leaders, local businesses, and everyday people whose efforts made a difference. Those experiences reinforced a simple belief: every person has a story worth telling, and I am happy to share that story with the audience. I founded Write On to continue this mission and passion of mine.

Through written features, photography, social media content, and community-focused storytelling, Write On shares a spotlight on the achievements, milestones, and positive moments that deserve recognition. My goal is to create meaningful content that informs, inspires, and preserves memories.
Write On will aim to celebrate the accomplishments and stories of those in Covington County, support our schools and communities, and ensure the people making a difference receive the recognition they deserve.
